In the midst of some school prep, and polishing off Assassins's Creed 2.
Update on 03/09/10: Add a nasty stomach bug that had me in bed for almost a week to that. I've got a couple of articles in mind, with one on reviews sitting in the queue waiting to be completed and maybe another thing about badassery regarding Chow Yun-Fat and Stranglehold. I've also got a game idea floating around in my head, and am considering putting together a proposal/functional spec for it. Yes, I am crazy.
Observations about the video game experience from the point of view of somebody who plays too many of them.

Some days I wonder
Everybody has that moment when they read a news story, and then they scratch their head afterward. It probably happens on a weekly, if not daily, basis and is nowhere near being uncommon. The world doesn't seem to make sense at times. Reading about a new digital media project in St. Catherines, ON last week, did it for me.

Rest for the wicked, but no sleep 'til launch
With school starting in almost exactly 4 weeks, I'm now weening myself off gaming. I might go snag Bioshock 2, now that it's $30, but that's going to be it for a while. I am contemplating picking up Halo: Reach on launch night, because I've never done a midnight launch from the other side of the doors, so I'm interested in the experience of it. It's seemed like fun, and reminds me of my days lining up for the first showing of new movies at the Uptown, when I lived in Toronto.

Eating cookies in the sandbox
Ahhh, don't you just love it when a game eats up your free time without a blink?
I was originally going to post about Tim Shafer's BrĂ¼tal Legend, and about innovation, as I had finally gotten around to completing the game. (Well, 97% complete, as I still have a bunch of dragon statues to free, should I actually devote the time to do so.) Then something happened....

Cookie Monster
So, I just passed the 15,000 mark in my Gamerscore, and am now fifth place in the imaginary race I have against the others on my friends list, none of whom seem to be aware that there is a race. Gamerpoints are important stuff, damn it!
When did gaming become so competitive, and when was it decided that we need cookies to get us to play?

Show and Tell, Hearts and Minds
In case it wasn't obvious, what I was getting at with the Riddick games is that we're almost literally told he's a badass, but that doesn't tend to carry over to game play. In games like the Halo and Gears of War series, we're shown that the characters are badass, and part of that is through game play. Regenerating health is one of the best additions to gaming since unlimited continues, as it really does reinforce the concept of cinematic badassery in video games, and does make the experience that much more fun.
