It's funny.
It's my first post in almost two years, and the catalyst is the same.
Sessler has once again left the building.
This last week, Adam Sessler announced that he was leaving video game journalism for good, and once again, I don't blame him one bit. Video game journalism is pretty much dead, as the most visible consumers of it are a foul bunch of morons that don't want actual journalism, just falaciation. This isn't to say that there aren't good sites run by good people fighting the good fight, but that it's becoming more and more evident that it's a losing battle.
We live in a time where death and rape threats are considered reasonable responses to disagreement in this very loud, very obnoxious, very toxic and dysfunctional community. We're at the point where the only reasonable response to the majority of the discourse is an ad-hominem: you're an idiot. (Or worse.)
It's the major reason, on top of being generally too busy, that I stopped blogging those couple of years ago. There just didn't seem to be a point for it.
Now, we're on the next generation of console, and it feels even more pointless. I'm almost at the point where I want to leaving gaming behind me, and find something else to do with my time, as it just feels that toxic to me. This is coming from a guy who has found himself an early adopter, and was eager to learn about this new generation, but is now barraged by insults over my (non)choice of console. (I won an Xbox One in a contest.)
Last generation, I had both the 360 and the PS3, and while I did most of my gaming on the 360, my PS3 was rarely ever collecting dust. (The fact that it was a better media player was a large part of that.) This generation, I'm not that excited. I don't for a moment feel like I'm the wrong demographic for gaming, not at all, I just feel like being connected to gaming leaves a bad taste in my mouth at the end of the day, and constantly feeling the need to shower.
On top of console gaming, I have a huge catalogue of Steam games ready for consumption, but even that feels tainted. Actually, that feels even more tainted, as I find the PC gaming crowd to be that much more insufferable than the console crowd, just because of the misplaced elitism involved.
I feel like Charlie Brown.
Good grief.
